How to Setup a Printer on Challenger 10 via serial

Some legacy installations use Challenger to print directly to a printer or a virtual printer device using a serial interface.

This can be achieved by using the onboard J15 Plug on the Challenger 10 panel.

Challenger 10 J15

 

Setup  Comms Device

  • Menu 4346
  • 19 Enter (Installer Menu)
  • 9 Enter (Communications Menu)
  • 1 Enter (Comms Devices)
  • 1 Enter (Onboard)
  • Enter in Serial Device information – Baud: 9600 – Data Bits 8 – Parity None (Most common settings)

Setup Comms Path

  • Menu 4346
  • 19 Enter (Installer Menu)
  • 9 Enter (Communications Menu)
  • 2 Enter (Comms Paths)
  • 5 Enter (Un-used Path)
  • Enter

Comms Path 5 – Main

  • 1 Enter (Main)
  • Enabled – Yes
  • Interface Location – Onboard 
  • Interface Port – RS232 STU
  • Format – Printer
  • Subformat – Epson
  • Backup Path – 0

Comms Path 5 – Connection Control

  • Connect on event – Yes
  • Remove all others – set to No

Comms Path 5 – Filter

  • Depending on requirements, enable what is required. In this case, only enabled:
  • Report Alarm Events – Yes
  • All the rest are  – No

To test on your Windows 7, 8, 10 via terminal I used TeraTerm software (FREE)

Terminal config:

  • Bits per second: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop Bits: 1
  • Flow Control: None
